About New Zealand Business Numbers
Every company, sole trader, partnership and trust on the New Zealand Business Number register has a thirteen digit NZBN. It is designed to be the one identifier that follows a business across government agencies, invoices and supply chains.
Thirteen digits is not a coincidence. An NZBN is a GS1 Global Location Number, the same standard as the barcode on a supermarket shelf, allocated to New Zealand under the company prefix 9429. That is why the check digit is the GS1 modulus 10 rather than something local: multiply alternate digits by 3 and 1 from the right, and the check digit is whatever brings the total up to a multiple of ten.
Numbers here always start with 9429 and always carry a correct check digit, so they behave like register data in a test suite without belonging to any business. To check an existing number, use the NZBN validator.
