About New Zealand IRD Numbers

An IRD (Inland Revenue Department) number is a 9-digit number issued by New Zealand Inland Revenue for tax purposes. This generator creates valid IRD-format numbers with proper modulus 11 checksum validation for testing and educational purposes.

Both shapes appear here. Numbers below 100,000,000 print as eight digits, which is what most New Zealanders have and what Inland Revenue's own worked example (49-091-850) looks like, and the rest print as nine. A test suite that has only ever seen nine digit input is one of the more common ways IRD validation breaks in the wild, so the generator deliberately produces both.

The range also grew: on 10 February 2026 Inland Revenue raised the largest valid IRD number from 150,000,000 to 200,000,000, leaving the length unchanged. This generator issues numbers across the full current range, so some of what you get here will be rejected by systems that still carry the old ceiling. That is a useful thing to discover in testing.
